Japanese
Here at Carrum Downs we decided to teach Japanese as our language other than English (LOTE). The reasoning behind this choice is a majority of secondary schools in the area also teach Japanese allowing our students a much smoother transition, to develop an appreciation and awareness of another culture that is very different from our own and it also gives a good foothold into a strong economy with many career prospects.
All students from Prep to grade 6 are offered one class per week with a specialist Japanese teacher to develop broad communication skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing whilst also focusing on the way language is used in its sociocultural context.
The program we run varies from lessons on the Japanese alphabets, key words and phrases, culture and history exploration, traditional Japanese games and crafts to name a few.
