At Carrum Downs, we have strong programs in reading, writing, spelling and oral language.   We follow the Victorian Essential Learning Standards and aim for all students to achievement the expected benchmarks for each year level.

Our reading program concentrates on establishing strong basic reading skills in the early years alongside competent comprehension skills. Building oral language and an extensive vocabulary supports effective reading skills.  Children in years 1 & 2 who need additional support in reading are provided with opportunities through the Reading Recovery program or the Language Support Program.  The writing program follows the PM program which features writing genres as well as important language structures and grammar. We use the THRASS method to spelling which is a linguistic approach giving children understanding about how words are constructed. Our teachers are dedicated to working and planning together to obtain the best results for your children.
